About the Ruby Fellows Program

The prestigious Ruby Distinguished Doctoral Fellows Program allows select doctoral students to work with nationally recognized faculty in their fields of study. Ruby Fellowships support research in four areas:

  • Energy and environmental sciences
  • Nanotechnology and material science
  • Biological, biotechnological, and biomedical sciences
  • Biometrics, security, forensic sciences, and related identification technologies

The fellowship’s financial support is intended to allow incoming doctoral level scholars to commit themselves fully to expanding their talents and using their research to benefit the people of West Virginia, the nation, and the world. Ruby Scholars receive a competitive support package, including:

  • $30,000 stipend
  • Waiver or payment of university and college tuition and fees
  • Graduate student health insurance
  • Up to $2,000 annually for professional development travel
